Galvanized steel tubes manufacturing
corrosion

In the steel tube industry, galvanized steel pipes are widely used in construction, infrastructure, and mechanical systems. Galvanized welded steel pipes are made by coating electric resistance welded (ERW) steel pipes with a protective layer of zinc to be protected against corrosion. The production process involves forming, welding and zinc spraying (on the weld seam).

However, the weld seam becomes a critical weak point:

  • Zinc depletion : With its relatively low boiling point (~900 °C), zinc is vaporized or consumed during welding, leaving the seam unprotected.
  • Accelerated corrosion : Once the galvanization layer is lost, the bare steel at the weld is directly exposed to corrosive environments.
  • Reduced service life : Corrosion initiates at the seam, compromising the structural integrity of the tube and shortening its lifespan.
Without corrective measures, the corrosion resistance of galvanized steel pipes is effectively eliminated at the weld seam.
