1920 – Origins in France
SNM is founded and quickly becomes one of the early pioneers in thermal spray technology, offering blasting and coating services, including on-site applications.
1955 – Rokide® in the USA
Norton, founded in 1885, invents and patents Rokide® rods, setting a global reference for durable ceramic flame-spray coatings.
1964 – Flexicords
SNM invents Flexicords, reinforcing its role as an innovator in coating materials.
1980s – APS Materials
Norton Company develops advanced ceramic powders for air plasma spray (APS), expanding the range of high-performance coating solutions.
1990s – Formation of Coating Solutions
Saint-Gobain acquires SNMI and Norton Company, merging their thermal spray activities into the newly formed Coating Solutions Business Unit.
1990s – EB-PVD Expertise
In Florida, Phoenix Coating Resources develops ceramic ingots for EB-PVD thermal barrier coatings, strengthening expertise in advanced processes for aerospace.
2014 – Integration of Phoenix
Saint-Gobain acquires Phoenix Coating Resources and integrates it fully into Coating Solutions, enhancing its global footprint.
